India: A Jewelry Spectrum
Oppi Untracht, curator
Oppi Untracht, a leading authority on Indian jewelry and curator of this exhibition, has selected a wide range of traditional Indian jewelry to represent the diverse and complex society from which it derives. The kind of jewelry worn and the motifs used often signify the wearer's cultural background, place of origin, or position in society. These designs are part of a continuum that began with objects made in the Indus Valley Civilization some four thousand years ago.
